Library Spotlight

Interview with Dolores Greenwald, Director, Williamson County Public Library, Franklin, TN (by Joyce Skokut)

Question: Do you have a program or service you would like to share with readers? –OR—What do you wish your customers knew about what your library offers?

Answer: Yes. I am excited about a Writers 4 Writers workshop we are offering on March 19, 2016, and Ingram Spark will be participating. The event runs from 8:30 – 3 and sessions include editing and writing; marketing and social media; layout and design; and the new face of independent publishing. Award winning author Sara J. Henry who has Nashville TN ties will be there to offer her expertise. This will be a great program and I am pleased and proud that Ingram will play a part!

Question: Where do you see librarianship in 10 years?

Answer: That is a great question and for me, one that seems to frequently change. For now I think the library in 10 years will be both content creators as well as content managers. Libraries are creating original content at a rapid pace and I think the trend will only grow. At Williamson County Public Library we have our own imprint, Academy Park Press, and we have published two books. I am also the executive director of our own television show on the county’s station WC-TV called Not Just Books.

Question: What’s your proudest moment as a librarian?

Answer: My proudest moment actually involves Ingram Spark! When our first published book arrived and those of who worked so hard on it could actually see and touch it, it was an amazing feeling. The pride that I felt for the Library and the other members of the team is hard to describe! It could not have happened without the services and help from Ingram Spark.

Question: What’s the craziest thing you’ve found in your bookdrop?

Answer: A single flip-flop.

Question: Please finish this sentence: “A library is…”

Answer: Community.

Editorial

Hello and welcome to the new Ingram newsletter written just for libraries! We at Ingram realize that the last thing you need is another aimless newsletter in your inbox, so we are soliciting your thoughts and comments to make this what you want to read. With each monthly edition, we will highlight a library, alert you to titles generating social media buzz (with the help from our friends at Edelweiss Analytics), tell you where Ingram representatives will be, let you in on tips and tools for using ipage, all the while helping you get to know your Ingram library team a little better.

We had so much fun brainstorming what this newsletter was going to look like and include. We hope that you enjoy our humor as much as we do. What’s most exciting is having such a diverse group of contributors lined up for future issues, including librarians, publishers, industry insiders, and Ingram employees.

One of the topics that have been floating around our Collection Development office is how we can be a more personalized business. Yes, we supply services to your library, but we are also librarians who want you to know that we love our jobs! When you contact Ingram Collection Development, you are talking to experienced librarians who want to work with you to get your projects off the ground.

In a nutshell, that is what this newsletter is about: passionate librarians in the industry helping passionate librarians in the field. Let us know what you want to know more about and any questions you may have. We are excited to start on this new journey with you!

Books we love

The “Books We Love” section is our chance to feature titles recommended by Ingram staff. We know that the beginning of cold weather might include such library challenges as frazzled patrons, kids on winter break hopped up on holiday sweets, and perhaps some especially fun end-of-year tasks such as gathering statistics and catching up on that weeding project, so we put together a list to help you and your patrons let off a little steam. These snarky humor titles lean more toward the “Bah, humbug” than “tidings of comfort and joy,” and will be sure to brighten the spirits of the stressed-out.

Get to Know Us

In this section we’ll feature a group or an individual at Ingram who we think you’d enjoy getting to know. Let’s begin this inaugural edition with an introduction to our weird and wonderful Collection Development Team. Pictured below, Row 1: Rita Allison, Jeanna Martin, Rachel Rich, Becky Walton, Ann Lehue, Trudy Ferguson, Shannan Rosa, Joyce Skokut. Row 2: Janet Hill, Jenny McCluskey, Holly Hebert, Elissa Wells, Beth Reinker, Tracy Gallagher, Jill Barton, Wils Smithwick. Between us we have 357 years of combined experience working with libraries. But more importantly, we own an impressive 17 cats! Hint: one or two of us are “dog people” or pet free at the moment, which means a couple of us have more than one cat! Regardless of our pet choices, we ALL love to watch videos of crazy animal behavior when we have a few free minutes. Hmmm, what else should we share?

We rock the Ingram house at Halloween with the biggest, baddest celebration around. It’s our favorite holiday! Our theme this year is iFear—we’ll come dressed as our biggest fear. So far we have one clown and one shark in the works. Here we are last year dressed as characters from our favorite poem or song (with some honorary team members added):

Last but not least, in typical librarian fashion, we are perfectionists and some days our biggest stress comes during afternoon snacks…having to manage the uneven distribution of colors in our m&m’s or skittles—see photo evidence below!
